Guide poling a flats skiff through a clear mangrove channel

What to expect from Exuma fishing

A clear, practical guide to the day—from meeting Stevie and packing your gear to fishing the flats and returning safely.

Your fishing day

Before departure

If you are not driving, plan transportation from your hotel for the agreed meeting time. Stevie keeps the boat a short drive from George Town on the west side of Great Exuma. Confirm the exact location, pickup plan and time directly before your trip.

A cooler with ice is provided. Ask in advance about lunch arrangements, and bring the food and beverages you expect to need.

What to bring

Sun and weather

  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and lip balm
  • Long-sleeve sun shirt
  • Hat and light rain gear

Personal items

  • Lunch and beverages
  • Camera or phone protection
  • Medication you may need
  • Small dry bag

Fishing gear

Bring your preferred rods, reels and flies if you have them. If you need equipment, discuss it before the date so availability and responsibility for loaned gear are clear.

Useful Great Exuma details

  • The Bahamian dollar and US dollar are generally used at equal value.
  • Electricity is 110 volts, as in the United States and Canada.
  • Driving is on the left side of the road.
  • Taxis operate throughout the island; confirm rates and pickup in advance.
  • Protect valuables as you would anywhere and do not leave them visible in a vehicle.
Weather and fishing are never guaranteed. The route, target species and schedule may change when safety, wind, tide or sea conditions require it.

At the end of the trip

Return timing depends on the agreed trip length and conditions. Keep the rest of your day flexible enough for safe travel back to your accommodation, especially if you have a flight or fixed reservation.
